This is basically a compilation of their finest work, featuring all the must-have tracks from The Band. With the Allen Toussaint-arranged horns, these renditions stand strong alongside the original album versions, possibly even surpassing them. It's an excellent starting point if you haven't yet added The Band to your collection. (I'd wager you'll soon be expanding it.) The bonus tracks are a fantastic addition, though the ones with Dylan are a bit questionable. There's a reason these songs weren't released two decades ago. They're raw, unpolished, and a tad messy. But come on, it's Bob Dylan and The Band! Highly recommended.
The Winchester version is said to be the best according to online sources, and they might just be onto something because this album sounds fantastic. It's got that warm, full sound but still has enough brightness to keep it well-balanced. The musicians really nailed it with their performances.
I picked this up upon its release, likely at Kemp Mill Records. It's hands down my top album from this band. If I had to choose just one of their records to hold onto, this would be the keeper.
