  • Tatum's Timeless Jazz Piano Brilliance

    3 out of 5 stars
    zejuHY_18 February 2024United States🇺🇸

In the realm of jazz piano, Art Tatum was the Eddie Van Halen of his time, showcasing extraordinary piano skills way ahead of his peers in the '50s. This thoughtfully assembled compilation of solo piano works exhibits his signature stride-influenced approach. Tatum's renditions of standards seamlessly blend regular and double-time passages, adorned with blazing two-finger arpeggios and pentatonic sequences. It's an absolute masterclass for any aspiring pianist. Standout tracks feature a technically demanding "Humoresque", his enchanting "Willow Weep For Me", and the breathtaking "Tatum Pole Boogie"—at times, it seems like there are three hands playing at once! Unfortunately, the original recordings are subpar, so you'll need to look past the audio quality to appreciate the brilliance of the performances. Consequently, it's futile to discuss the pressing quality, as even a below-average disc won't significantly alter the sound. 3 stars.
