I recently picked up this Brazilian first edition for just £2 at a record fair. The vinyl is super light, it might even compete with my Dynaflex US copy of Isaac Hayes' "Black Moses" for the title of thinnest record in my collection. That said, it plays nicely and is a pleasant, calming listen. I was quite taken aback, having known the Getz/Gilberto album for ages, by how raw the vocals were (sorry Jobim enthusiasts) but it adds to the appeal and the laid-back vibe. Not a must-have, but definitely worth holding onto.
I'm a big fan of this compilation, but I'm not thrilled with the mastering job and the pressing of this vinyl record. Like every other release in Philips' "Personalidade" series, this one was produced during the peak of the "CD craze" in Brazil, using the "As Cheap As Possible" approach. Consequently, the vinyl is too light and the sleeves and covers are barely tolerable. The record plays fine, but since many of the tracks are also featured in "The Composer Of Desafinado, Plays," that album is the better choice. The "Digitally Remastered" technique used in Jobim's "Personalidade" pales in comparison to the original album. While the recordings in "Personalidade" sound decent, they're quite distorted and compressed. In contrast, the same recordings in "The Composer of Desafinado, Plays" sound much more enjoyable and relaxing. 4/5.
