  • Shirley Scott's Clear Day Masterpiece

    5 out of 5 stars
    WrYegou17 June 2024United States🇺🇸

Out of the roughly two dozen Shirley Scott albums that have graced my ears, "ON A CLEAR DAY" stands tall as my absolute favorite. Unlike the typical organ trio lineup of organ/guitar/drums or organ/sax/drums, Scott's trio often featured organ/bass/drums, and this January 1966 session is no different, with Ron Carter on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums. Throughout this record, Scott's solos are a masterclass in her signature style—melodic, lightning-fast, and with a touch that's lighter yet just as commanding as her peers. This is an original 1966 pressing in stunning mono, boasting a rich bass, crisp and clear drums, a massive organ sound, and a warm, immersive soundstage. My copy plays like a dream, with barely any surface noise to be heard. Five stars and a big smiley face for this one!
