This is a truly outstanding session from one of the best in hard bop—captured in October 1957 and featuring two incredible lineups: a quintet (with Art Farmer, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, Charlie Persip) and a larger nonet including Gigi Gryce, Sahib Shihab, Jimmy Cleveland, and Julius Watkins. Tracks like “Whisper Not,” “Step Lightly,” and “Capri” showcase amazing arrangements, melodic saxophone solos, and fantastic group interplay.
