I'm a huge Pat Metheny fan, but I just can't get into a double album featuring just one instrument by any artist... especially with over 18,500 other CDs and records I could be listening to instead... If there were only 25 recordings in the entire world, maybe I could manage it...
Poor quality pressing. The first disc had scratches, REALLY bad ones, and the second copy just doesn't sound right. It's full of pops, has a high noise level, and lacks dynamics.
Poor quality pressing. The first disc had scratches, REALLY bad ones, and the second copy just sounds off. Crackles, too much background noise, and lacks punch.
Given the numerous soft segments in this album, the quality of the pressing is paramount, and I've been thoroughly impressed—exceptionally quiet and flawless. While it's true that the inner sleeves are made of paper, it's not much of an issue if you're in the habit of re-sleeving your records. Metheny's smooth improvisation is a highlight, creating a profoundly reflective yet approachable auditory experience.
After hearing Pat's chat on talkshop live, I was so intrigued by his description and the short clips played that I decided to order it right away. I went for the version with the autographed insert, signed with a silver pen. The vinyl is 180g and spotless, not a single mark in sight. However, I was let down to find paper inner sleeves, which I'm not a fan of, so I swapped them out for something more fitting for a solo album with its quiet moments. I'm still on my first listen and really digging Pat's performance. But then again, I'd buy any PM recording I come across. I think I paid an extra $20 for the autographed version, which, looking back, wasn't really necessary in my opinion. Funny enough, a month later, I got to meet and talk with Linda Manzer, who has made dozens of guitars for Pat. Her expertise and careful approach to her craft are truly impressive. 4.5 stars. Highly recommend.
