Product Description

Philip Glass's "Mishima" is a captivating journey through the life and works of the renowned Japanese author Yukio Mishima, composed as the soundtrack for Paul Schrader's 1985 biographical film. This minimalist, classical masterpiece is Glass's String Quartet No. 3, uniquely programmed with each movement explicitly labeled to reflect different aspects of Mishima's life. The album, released on Nonesuch in January 1985, spans 46 minutes of intricate, neoclassical compositions that beautifully underscore the film's rich cinematography and stunning visuals. From the haunting melodies of "November 25: Morning" to the intense, rhythmic pulses of "RUNAWAY HORSES," Glass's score is a testament to his ability to blend music and narrative seamlessly. Whether you're a fan of Glass's work or a newcomer to his compositions, "Mishima" offers a profound and immersive experience that highlights the power of music in storytelling.

This LP was released in 1987.

If you're among those who claim that all of Philip Glass's soundtracks blend together, this particular album should change your mind with its diverse arrangements and instrumentation of those signature motifs. I must confess, this, "The Hours," and "Koyaanisqatsi" stand as my top picks from Glass's soundtrack collection.
