Product Description

"Memories Of Thelonious Sphere Monk" is a captivating live album by the legendary jazz vibraphonist Milt Jackson, recorded at the iconic Ronnie Scott's Club in London on April 28, 1982. This album is a testament to Jackson's virtuosity and his deep connection to the jazz tradition, particularly his admiration for the pioneering pianist Thelonious Monk.

The album spans a variety of jazz styles, including hard bop, bebop, cool jazz, and jazz blues, showcasing Jackson's versatility and mastery of the genre. The tracks, such as "Straight, No Chaser" and "'Round Midnight," are Monk compositions, while others like "Blue Monk" and "In Walked Bud" are nods to the jazz greats who have inspired Jackson throughout his career. This album is an absolute treasure! It was the first time I'd ever listened to Milt... And I've been a fan ever since. I haven't checked out other versions and I don't see the need to. It's perfectly balanced and pressed just right.

  • Ray Brown's Emotional Solo Shines

    5 out of 5 stars
    YepyazuQelr16 June 2025United States🇺🇸

In this rendition of "'Round Midnight," Ray Brown's bowed bass takes center stage, creating a profoundly emotional solo that shines amidst the other fantastic tracks. It's truly a remarkable performance that makes this Milt Jackson album a must-listen.

  • Monk-Inspired Jazz Quartet Shines

    5 out of 5 stars
    NbZacui27 August 2024United Kingdom🇬🇧

Just a couple of months prior to Thelonious Monk's passing, this Monk-inspired set was captured, part of a series of albums Pablo put out from a multi-night performance in April 1982 at London's Ronnie Scott's, featuring this same quartet. Like nearly all of Milt Jackson's works for the label, this album is a consistently impressive piece, showcasing excellent musicianship, and the vinyl itself is top-notch, offering a very quiet, intimate, and spacious ambiance. There's a peculiar piece of incorrect info on the back cover - Monty Alexander is listed as playing organ, when he's actually on piano. My copy plays back smoothly with a hint of faint surface noise at the start of each side.

  • Ray Brown's Bass Shines

    5 out of 5 stars
    YabhuzaRadr9 February 2024United States🇺🇸

In this rendition of "'Round Midnight," Ray Brown's bowed bass takes center stage, creating a truly stirring performance that shines amidst the other fantastic tracks. Milt Jackson has delivered yet another superb album with this one.
