  • Herbie Mann's London Underground

    3 out of 5 stars
    DikQoyxdukh12 September 2025United States🇺🇸

London Underground is pretty much the last in that fantastic series of must-have Herbie Mann records that kicked off in the late '60s. Standout tracks include Bitch (with Ian McDonald from King Crimson), Paper Sun, and Layla. The energetic drums and bass are sheer joy, much like on Memphis Underground. If you're new to Herbie and wondering why a jazz flautist—often the most overlooked musician—is getting such glowing praise from rock fans, well, he had a knack for discovering talent and assembling bands. He fostered unique artists like Roy Ayers and future guitar legend Sonny Sharrock. He used his cover choices to shine a light on underground acts like E Birdsong, Eugene McDaniel, William S Fischer, and on this album, Paddy Kingsland from the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. And let's not forget, he played some seriously funky flute! If you're just getting into Herbie, I'd suggest starting with Memphis Underground and the live album Hold on I'm coming. Beyond that, I can't say it better than lubizianrecord's review below 👇

  • Herbie Mann's Soulful Groove

    5 out of 5 stars

Fans of Herbie Mann's 'Push Push' might also dig this one. Herbie's a truly soulful flutist, he's got this knack for pulling in jazz purists, rock enthusiasts, and pop fans all under one roof to vibe to his tunes. It's a tough gig, which is why Atlantic records put so much faith in him. 'Bitch' is the standout track – Mick Taylor and Herbie absolutely crush it. They've buffed it up real nice, Herbie's rockin' groovy flutist vibes!

Herbie's a soulful flutist, he's got the power to bring together jazz purists, rock enthusiasts, and pop fans all under one roof, all grooving to his tunes. It's a tough act, which is why Atlantic records puts so much faith in him. 'Bitch' is the standout track – Mick Taylor and Herbie absolutely nail it, they've really buffed it up.
