I've yet to hear a better live performance by the Stooges than this one.
Picked this up upon its release. Being an Iggy Pop/Stooges enthusiast, I still give it regular spins. The audio quality surpasses any other live captures of the original Stooges, though it doesn't quite match the superior recordings from the 1972-74 lineup ("Georgia Peaches" and Metallic K.O.). It's not as harsh as the 1971 bootlegs. The sound's a bit muffled but clear. There's not much distinction between the vocals and the instruments. Is this record essential? It was for me. I've got a vast collection of iffy Stooges recordings from that time. Funhouse is among my all-time favorite albums. So, hearing it live, with Dave Alexander still on bass, is a real treat. I was just two months old when this festival took place, so this is as close as I can get to that golden era.
