Having been an admirer of Sasha Ring's creations for some time, and even with a heads-up from a few reviews about how this album diverges from his typical style, I can honestly say nothing could have fully prepared me for just HOW distinct it is. It's akin to the cartoonist from the Sunday Times newspaper suddenly crafting a Cubist masterpiece, or the McDonald's staff member - instead of serving up a Big Mac and fries, presenting you with a prime cut of Filet Mignon with pepper sauce and lightly buttered green beans. Now, I'm not implying that Apparat's usual work is ordinary, but sometimes an artist sets an incredibly high standard for themselves, making it nearly impossible to follow up without falling short. They're forever measured against their own peak performance, which is a tough act to follow. Once we've witnessed their absolute best, anything less just won't cut it. I wouldn't be shocked if Sasha Ring never releases another album, given the overwhelmingly intricate subject matter, yet beautifully straightforward presentation, delicately balanced exploration of humanity's tendency towards global self-destruction, all conveyed through Electronic Ambient Music. Things like this shouldn't be achievable, yet here we are.
