Product Description

Celebrate the 70th anniversary of the legendary pianist John Ogdon with this comprehensive compilation, released by Warner Classics on July 2, 2007. Spanning a generous three hours and one minute, this edition showcases Ogdon's extraordinary prowess and versatility across a curated selection of classical piano masterpieces.

The album opens with Rachmaninov's monumental Piano Concerto No. 2 in C Minor, Op. 18, followed by his Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Op. 43, a work renowned for its technical brilliance and emotional depth. Ogdon's interpretation of these pieces is a testament to his ability to convey both the grandeur and intimacy of Rachmaninov's compositions.

The journey continues with Fauré's Ballade for Piano and Orchestra, Op. 19, and Scherzo from Concerto symphonique No. 4 in D minor Op. 102, showcasing Ogdon's delicate touch and nuanced phrasing. Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-Flat Minor, Op. 23, is another highlight, where Ogdon's virtuosic playing brings out the concerto's dramatic contrasts and lyrical beauty.

Franck's Symphonic Variations for Piano and Orchestra, FWV 46, is performed with a depth of expression that highlights Ogdon's interpretive skills. The album also includes Liszt's Hungarian Fantasia S123 and Rhapsodie espagnole S254, remastered in 2007, offering a glimpse into Ogdon's ability to infuse nationalistic fervor and rhythmic vitality into his performances.

The collection concludes with Bartók's Piano Concerto No. 1, Sz. 83, a work that demands both technical precision and emotional depth, qualities that Ogdon delivers with aplomb. This anniversary edition is a fitting tribute to John Ogdon's enduring legacy as one of the most celebrated pianists of the 20th century.

About John Ogdon

John Ogdon was a virtuoso English pianist and composer, renowned for his intense and deeply emotional performances. Born in 1937, Ogdon's career spanned several decades, leaving an indelible mark on the classical music world. His repertoire was vast, encompassing works from Baroque to contemporary compositions, but he was particularly celebrated for his interpretations of the Romantic repertoire, including the music of Chopin, Liszt, and Rachmaninoff. Ogdon's playing was characterized by its technical brilliance, profound musical insight, and a fearless approach to the most challenging pieces. Beyond his pianistic achievements, Ogdon was also a respected composer, although his compositions are less known than his performances. His life was as intense as his music, marked by periods of brilliance and struggle, making his story as compelling as his artistry.
