This reissue is a stunning testament to Sam Records' stellar reputation. The vinyl copy I received is flawlessly flat and remarkably quiet, with barely any surface noise, clicks, or pops to be found. Even though it's mono, the soundstage is impressively deep: the horns leap out with crystal clarity, while the piano and drums nestle comfortably behind, crafting a believable, nearly 3D-like atmosphere. The tonal balance is warm, well-centered, and harmonious, with superb separation achieved through space and texture, not artificial means. Optimal's pressing quality is top-notch, and the mastering from the original mono tapes offers a lively, intimate club-like vibe that begs for repeated plays. It's an exceptional modern pressing of this iconic Paris recording.
I've got a few of the fresh represses (they're using Optimal instead of Pallas now) and they're a tad noisier (you know, ticks) than I'd prefer, but the sound quality is absolutely fantastic. This one might just be my top pick from the bunch! I ordered straight from the Sam Records website, and Fred took the time to remove all the records from their jackets to prevent any seam splits. But, the jackets did end up with some slightly crushed corners, probably 'cause the mailers weren't the best or maybe they weren't packed right.
Incredible tunes, wasn't sure what to anticipate but I'm blown away. The pressing is fantastic - flawless, pristine and no vinyl noise!
Gorgeous pressing, sounds flawless. The 2021 reissue is pressed at optimal, not Pallas like this one
Sound is amazing. Gave it a Spin Clean run before playing and it's super quiet.
