Marvin Gaye's sixteenth studio album, In Our Lifetime, hit the shelves on January 15, 1981, under Tamla Records, a Motown subsidiary. The tracks were laid down in various studios, including Marvin's Room in Los Angeles, Seawest Recording Studio in Honolulu, and Odyssey Studios in London, spanning the years 1979 and 1980. The album's artwork was crafted by Neil Breeden. Serving as Gaye's final project with Motown before his move to Columbia Records, this album succeeded the commercially underwhelming Here, My Dear, a double album that delved into the singer's divorce from Anna Gordy. With Gaye at the helm, writing, producing, arranging, and mixing every aspect, In Our Lifetime marked a shift from the disco vibes of his prior two albums and is widely regarded as one of his standout works from his later Motown years.
Absolutely amazing sounding vinyl. If you're a fan of Marvin and enjoy funk, you'll adore this album.
I'm still on the lookout for this deluxe edition to hit vinyl. You can skip the original album version (it's already out on vinyl in numerous pressings). What we're after is the remix album (from Disc 2), along with ALL the bonus tracks on vinyl. Come on, Universal!! Make it happen. Perhaps a future RSD drop?
Sadly, this pressing is quite poor. It's dull, lacks energy, and sounds squashed.
In Our Lifetime" is an amazing display of Marvin's Disco Soul groove. The words and story have a lasting impact. I play this album often and, even though there are a few weaker tracks, it generally captures the brilliance of Marvin's later creations. Highlights are: Love Party, Praise, Heavy Love Affair, Life is for Learning. 4 stars.
