The authentic French version is the finest. It boasts excellent sound quality, a robust shiny laminated gatefold, and gorgeous pink Island labels, all at a reasonable price - the perfect way to enhance your collection with this timeless album.
The audio quality is fantastic, but I'm shocked at how poorly the B-side was produced. The track 'Past Orbits Of Dust' sounds like it's from a damaged master tape, particularly the vocals. I can't believe it's just my copy because the record appears fine. I tested it on two turntables. Initially, I suspected an issue with the amplifier, then with the needle. But my concerns vanished when I played it on a second turntable. What a letdown... Great album, but shoddy work. I wonder if the entire series is like this, or if I'm the only one who received a damaged copy.
This version is a keeper. It's a solid German pressing. The sound is warm and smooth, maybe a bit missing on the high end, but I dig it for this kind of music. There's a cool texture and hue to the usual pink-edged Island label. Sure, it would've been sweet to have a UK copy from when it first came out, but no dice! The gatefold sleeve is a tad flimsy, which is odd considering how sturdy they used to make 'em back then. Feels like the band's budget was getting tight. As someone who's been in a few bands, I find the whole story behind this album's creation and the band's lineup changes super intriguing. Despite all the drama, the album turned out chill, spacious, and surprisingly well put together. And don't even get me started on how it was basically unavailable in the UK for like seven years! For me, this is one of Renaissance's best. Totally worth checking out. Peace, maan.
