Product Description

Coleman Hawkins, a titan of the jazz world, delivers a captivating journey through various jazz styles with his 1989 album "Hollywood Stampede." This collection, released under Blue Note Records, spans a mere 48 minutes but packs a punch with its diverse tracks that blend bebop, cool jazz, and hard bop seamlessly. Hawkins' mastery of the saxophone is on full display, taking listeners through a dynamic range of emotions and rhythms.

The album kicks off with the classic "April In Paris," a timeless piece that sets the tone for the rest of the record. Hawkins' rendition of "Rifftide" showcases his improvisational skills, while "Stardust" offers a smoother, more melodic interlude. The title track, "Hollywood Stampede," is a standout, blending energetic beats with Hawkins' signature saxophone work.

"Hollywood Stampede" is not just a showcase of Hawkins' talent but also a tribute to the golden age of jazz. Tracks like "I'm Thru With Love" and "Isn't It Romantic?" pay homage to classic standards, while "Bean-A-Re-Bop" and "Phantomesque" inject a modern twist into the mix. The album closes with "The Way You Look Tonight," a beautiful, slow-burning number that leaves a lasting impression.

For jazz enthusiasts and newcomers alike, "Hollywood Stampede" is a testament to Coleman Hawkins' enduring legacy. His ability to blend different jazz styles with ease makes this album a timeless addition to any music collection.

This is a 1989 Remastered released as a LP.

  • Capitol Studios Jazz Brilliance

    5 out of 5 stars

I'd love to dig up more details about these Capitol Studios sessions in Hollywood (pre-Capitol Tower) from 1945. Hawk's band is absolutely killing it, reaching new heights of brilliance, and the recordings themselves are phenomenal! Where exactly was this studio located? How were the mics set up? Who engineered these tracks? Why isn't this collection hailed as one of the greatest in jazz history? This album sparkles with finesse, groove, and attitude. How many stars? Give it every single one!
