Product Description

Shirley Scott's "Hip Twist" is a vibrant journey through the soulful landscapes of jazz, released on January 1, 2000, under the Hallmark label. This album is a testament to Scott's mastery of soul jazz, hard bop, and acid jazz, offering a compelling blend of styles that showcase her virtuosic organ playing and her ability to craft engaging, dynamic compositions.

With a runtime of just under 40 minutes, "Hip Twist" is a concise yet impactful collection of tracks that highlight Scott's versatility and depth as an artist. The album opens with the title track, "Hip Twist," setting the stage with a groovy, upbeat number that immediately draws the listener in. "At Last" follows, offering a smoother, more melodic contrast, while "Rippin' An' Runnin'" brings back the energy with its hard bop sensibilities.

Scott's rendition of "The Very Thought Of You" is a standout, showcasing her ability to infuse a classic standard with her unique soulful touch. "Violent Blues" lives up to its name with a gritty, intense performance, while "That's All" provides a moment of tender reflection. The album closes with "All Tore Down," a powerful, driving track that leaves a lasting impression.

Throughout "Hip Twist," Shirley Scott's organ playing is the driving force, supported by a talented ensemble that includes top-notch musicians who complement her style perfectly. The album is a celebration of jazz in its many forms, offering something for both longtime fans of Shirley Scott and those new to her work. It's a must-listen for anyone looking to explore the rich, soulful world of jazz.

This is a 1972 Repress released as a LP.

  • Scott's Sophisticated Swing

    5 out of 5 stars
    MgMicoi3 November 2024United Kingdom🇬🇧

During this period of Shirley Scott's career, the albums she created with her saxophonist spouse Stanley Turrentine often have a bit more energy than her organ/bass/drums works, and HIP TWIST is a typically sophisticated recording from November 1961, featuring a blend of covers and original tunes. This mono pressing offers a warm and cozy sound, and my copy plays back smoothly with occasional light surface noise.
