Woody Herman, a titan of the big band era, delivers a powerful set that showcases his band's virtuosity and his own innovative leadership.

The album opens with a dynamic rendition of "I Can't Get Next To You," followed by a soulful interpretation of "Superstar." Another thing I noticed about the album cover, apart from all the young guys in the Herd. On the cover, Woody's seen playing a clarinet. But according to the liner notes, he only played sax on the record. I suppose we've got to figure the photo was snapped during a tune that didn't make it onto the album.

Another thing I noticed about the album cover, apart from the younger guys featured in the Herd. On the cover, Woody is seen playing a clarinet. However, the liner notes mention he only played sax throughout the album. I suppose we have to assume the photo was taken while recording a track that didn't make it to the final album.

According to the liner notes, the band hit the stage at 3 AM. Woody is amazing! Give this album and "Light My Fire" a spin. Top-notch music!

Noticed something else about the cover besides the younger guys in the Herd. It shows Woody holding a clarinet, but the liner notes say he only played sax on the album. I suppose we have to figure the photo was taken during a song that didn't make it to the record.
