This 1984 ECM release showcases a great compilation of Carla Bley's original compositions. I've been a long-time admirer of her work, ever since I first listened to Dreams So Real and Dinner Music back in my college days. I've even had the pleasure of seeing her perform live with Steve Swallow a couple of times. The tracks on this album lean more towards fusion compared to her earlier works, featuring impressive guitar contributions from Hiram Bullock. His solos and fills are perfectly placed, adding a real punch to the music. The bold trombone parts also bring an extra layer of depth to these arrangements. Carla herself is an outstanding pianist, though she tends to play more supportively here, letting the band shine. The overall sound is contemporary jazz/fusion from the 80s, with a somewhat somber mood and a few upbeat moments. The audio quality is good, and the pressing is fine.
