  • Emerging Soul Revival Star

    5 out of 5 stars
    Uyfot11 August 2025United States🇺🇸

Wow! What a fantastic album from an emerging artist hailing from Birmingham. Paul Janeway is just what the music world needs, offering a powerful vocal presence that breaks away from the norm. His upbringing in a devout environment shines through in his performance, giving the record a feel reminiscent of a grand revival gathering. The influence of Otis Redding is evident and wonderfully executed throughout. As someone who once immersed themselves entirely in Otis' music for years, I'm thrilled to hear this evolution of soul, which, while not sounding like Redding, shares a similar spirit. Fans of this sound might also enjoy exploring the work of Otis' protégé James Govan, as well as the Capsoul and Prix labels from the seventies, for more hidden gems of soul music. The band is currently on tour, and it's definitely worth making the trip to catch their live show.

  • Amazing Album with Minor Noise

    4 out of 5 stars
    Cuslygee27 April 2025United States🇺🇸

From start to finish, this album is absolutely amazing! There's some audible surface noise on the final three tracks of the B-Side, but it's not too distracting that it takes you away from the music.

  • Mediocre Album Effort

Average quality. They could've done a better job for such a great album.

  • Half the City Shines

Based on my listening setup, which includes a custom-built U-Turn Orbit turntable with an integrated Pluto amp and an Ortofon 2M Red cartridge, paired with Edifier R2000db powered speakers, I must say, this record is fantastic. I'm no audiophile, but I'm working on it. The vinyl pressing is excellent—super quiet with minimal surface noise. The dynamics could be a tad more impressive, but overall, it's a great pressing! As for the music, I believe this is Broken Bones' most cohesive album to date. I say that reluctantly because I love all their work. But every time I listen to Half the City, it stands out as something special. It's got the most soul, the most refined funk—it's Broken Bones at their absolute best! I'm in love with this record; it's a true gem in my collection.

  • Chilling Smooth Sound Mix

    5 out of 5 stars
    2vwgiqehz25 September 2024United States🇺🇸

Really enjoyed this one...smooth and quiet wax with a great sound mix, though it's a bit on the flat side...still, the vocals really stand out. Overall, it's an awesome listen...if this doesn't give you chills, you might as well be a zombie.
