Víkingur Ólafsson, the acclaimed Icelandic pianist, presents "From Afar," a captivating journey through a diverse repertoire of classical piano works. Released on October 7, 2022, under the prestigious Deutsche Grammophon label, this album spans a generous 1 hour and 43 minutes, offering a rich and immersive experience for classical music enthusiasts.
The album is a testament to Ólafsson's virtuosity and versatility, featuring a blend of well-known masterpieces and lesser-known gems. It includes arrangements by Ólafsson himself, such as the serene "Adagio" from Bach's Sonata for Solo Violin and the ethereal "Laudate Dominum" from Mozart's Vespers. The program also showcases works by Kurtág, Brahms, Schumann, and other composers, demonstrating Ólafsson's deep connection to a wide range of musical styles and periods.
One of the standout features of "From Afar" is its unique presentation of pieces performed on both grand piano and upright piano. This duality adds a distinctive layer to the album, highlighting the subtle differences in tone and resonance between the two instruments. The contrast is particularly evident in the repeated tracks, inviting listeners to appreciate the nuances of Ólafsson's interpretations and the instruments' characteristics.
The album's title, "From Afar," suggests a sense of distance and introspection, which is reflected in the thoughtful selection of pieces. From the meditative "Christe, du Lamm Gottes" by Bach to the delicate "Träumerei" by Schumann, each track is imbued with a sense of contemplation and emotional depth. Ólafsson's playing is marked by its clarity, precision, and expressive sensitivity, making this album a compelling addition to any classical music collection.
"From Afar" is not just a collection of beautiful piano pieces; it is a carefully curated exploration of the piano repertoire, showcasing Víkingur Ólafsson's artistic vision and technical brilliance. Vikingur claims to perceive colors when he's into music, and I'm entirely convinced after hearing this. He truly creates stunning visuals with his piano, using music as his palette. Just close your eyes and let the melodies 'show' you something amazing. The recording and production are spot on.
