Product Description

Emmanuel Chabrier's "French Lollipops" is a delightful collection of orchestral works that showcases the composer's unique blend of wit, charm, and melodic invention. Released on January 1, 2000, under the Maestoso label, this album offers a diverse range of pieces that span various moods and styles, all united by Chabrier's distinctive voice.

The album opens with "Marche joyeuse," a lively and energetic piece that sets the tone for the rest of the collection. It continues with "L'Enfant prodigue," a work that demonstrates Chabrier's ability to craft compelling narratives through music. The delicate and evocative "Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune" follows, showcasing the composer's subtle and sophisticated use of orchestration.

The album also features excerpts from Chabrier's operas, including the dramatic "Danse des prêtresses de Dagon" and "Bacchanale" from "Samson et Dalila," as well as the tender "Le Sommeil de Juliette" from "Roméo et Juliette." These selections highlight Chabrier's skill in creating memorable melodies and his ability to convey a wide range of emotions.

The "Dolly Suite," a set of character pieces inspired by Chabrier's friend and patron, the Countess of Greffulhe, is another highlight of the album. Each movement offers a different mood and musical idea, from the gentle "Berceuse" to the lively "Le pas espagnol."

The album concludes with two of Chabrier's most famous orchestral works, "Le Rouet d'Omphale" and "Pavane," both of which showcase the composer's ability to create rich, complex textures and memorable melodies. With a total duration of just over an hour, "French Lollipops" is a compact yet satisfying introduction to the music of Emmanuel Chabrier, one of France's most distinctive and underappreciated composers.
