This is undoubtedly a sparkling solo debut from one of the most skilled reed players of the hard bop and modern big band era. Daniels switches seamlessly between tenor saxophone and clarinet (the latter becoming his go-to instrument over time), showcasing his remarkable talent on both. He was concurrently working with the now-iconic Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra (now known as the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra since '90), so the rhythm section naturally features notable members from that ensemble. With 8 tracks that are musically diverse, half of which are Daniels' own inspired compositions, this album is a must-have not just for Eddie Daniels enthusiasts, but also for fans of the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra. It's a shame it's been out of print on CD for so long, but trust me, it's worth the hunt for a copy!
