Discovered this gem today at a second-hand store, still in its original packaging from '81!
I'm with you on this one. It ain't Tres Hombres, but it sure does sound great.
In my view, this is among ZZ Tops finest albums. The audio quality and recording are top-notch.
The sound quality of this Columbia House record seems great to me, though I haven't checked out any other versions...
Arguably ZZ Top's grooviest album, 'El Loco' hinted at their future sound, packed with synths that would later define 'Eliminator' and 'Afterburner'. It was also their final LP before they hit the big time, perhaps giving them the freedom to stray from the formula that later albums would be criticized for. Not that 'El Loco' wasn't a success (it went gold) or lacked its share of timeless tracks. "Pearl Necklace" and "Tube Snake Boogie" were the chart-toppers, proving the band's wit (or the naivety of radio DJs) by sneaking in songs with blatant sexual references and still getting heavy rotation! Songs like "Ten Foot Pole", "Party on the Patio", "Groovy Little Hippie Pad", and the bizarre "Heaven, Hell or Houston" are anything but ordinary, adding to the album's charm with each spin. ZZ Top was always a band that didn't take themselves too seriously, and 'El Loco' showcased that perfectly. They were on the verge of MTV fame, but 'El Loco', with its unique sound, wasn't a sell-out, and that's why it'll always have my respect...blow your top, blow your top!
