This ain't my top pick from Aerosmith, but the sound quality on this one is pretty decent!
This is a fantastic pressing of a timeless piece! It's incredibly rich with an excellent dynamic range. The Santa Maria plant's quality control is top-notch, which definitely makes a difference!
This Japanese vinyl release is absolutely stunning (10/10). While it's not a subtle album, this particular pressing sounds incredibly clear, avoiding the distortion and excessive compression that you'll find in US pressings. I own two very early US pressings, as well as the 20-bit CD from the late 90s.
I used to believe that the harsh criticism this album received upon its release was largely due to its bold, thin sound and lack of clarity—qualities that the two preceding albums didn't have. However, the 2023 CD version (featuring a supposed 2013 remaster for streaming) sounds fantastic, with a clarity that surpasses my memories. The music is absolutely incredible (and Tyler's singing is as over-the-top as ever!).
Having finished "Walk This Way", Aerosmith's autobiography, I'm blown away that the band managed to put out this album on schedule and have it sound so great. They were in a serious state during the recording of this one. Steven Tyler mentioned they had a tough time getting Joe Perry out of his room and into the studio to lay down his tracks. Tyler also admitted he was struggling to come up with the lyrics, finding it a daily challenge. Giving this album a listen after reading the book really changed my perspective on it. I'm seriously impressed that this chaotic bunch of addicts could pull it off and do such a fantastic job.
