  • Jazz Heals Depression

    5 out of 5 stars

...you'll constantly find me wearing a wide grin as I enjoy this album. When it hit the shelves, I was just bouncing back from a month-long bout of depression, so this warm and witty flirtation with "mainstream jazz," packed with cleverness, was precisely what the doctor ordered. Carla Bley and Michael Mantler were like surrogate parents to me at the time, creating a link between modern jazz and deep literary works like those of Samuel Beckett, welcoming half the Soft Machine crew into the fold...

  • Bley's Early Jazz Gem

    3 out of 5 stars
    bugaQL_7 October 2024United StatesπŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

This is a fantastic compilation of Carla Bley's early works, brought to life by a stellar lineup of studio musicians. Back in '87, I stumbled upon this at the library, having no idea what I was in for. The tunes are so catchy, they've stayed with me all these years. There's an amazingly beautiful Eric Gale guitar solo on "Dreams So Real", with some killer volume swells. Plus, the tuba and trombone parts in these arrangements are top-notch. That brass player is something else; they really bring a lot to this session. Over the following years, Bley would dive deeper into avant-garde jazz, developing her unique sound. Her music stands up there with Charlie Mingus. 3.5 stars. Great album.
