Product Description

Immerse yourself in the enchanting sounds of Peter Maxwell Davies' "Davies: An Orkney Wedding, with Sunrise," a captivating orchestral journey released on Linn Records in 2016. This 59-minute album is a testament to Davies' mastery of composition, blending traditional Scottish folk melodies with contemporary classical techniques.

The album opens with the Concert Overture, setting the stage for a rich tapestry of musical experiences. The centerpiece, "Hill Runes," is a five-movement suite that showcases Davies' intricate and expressive writing for strings. Each movement, from the contemplative Adagio to the lively Vivace scherzando, offers a unique emotional landscape.

The title track, "An Orkney Wedding, with Sunrise," is a lively and rhythmic piece that captures the spirit of a traditional Scottish wedding, complete with the dawn's first light. Also included is a solo guitar arrangement of "Farewell to Stromness," a poignant piece that reflects on the changing landscapes of the Orkney Islands.

Peter Maxwell Davies, a prolific and innovative composer, brings his unique perspective to this album, drawing from his experiences living in the Orkney Islands. The result is a collection of works that are both deeply rooted in tradition and strikingly modern. Whether you're a fan of classical music or simply looking to explore something new, this album offers a rich and rewarding listening experience.
