With "Candy Apple Grey," Hüsker Dü shifts towards a more generic alternative rock sound on their major label debut. The songs don't quite hit the mark like before. The whole album carries a consistent downer vibe. Broken relationships, uncertainty, and physical and mental decline are the main topics. There's no rule saying those themes can't be paired with great music. But on this record, we mostly get those themes without the great music. It just makes everything feel tense. It's not an unpleasant listen, just uninteresting and easy to forget. I'd be satisfied with just the "Don't Want to Know If You are Lonely" single. The rest of the album feels like a collection of B-sides. It's a noticeable step down from their previous album "Flip Your Wig," but the band bounces back a bit on the next one, "Warehouse: Songs and Stories," which mostly continues the alternative rock direction but with better songs. This compact disc sounds flat and lifeless, which makes the lack of appeal even worse. "Candy Apple Grey" is far from their best work, and not the ideal introduction to the band.
I've got an RM etching in the runout groove on mine, but I'm not spotting that here in this listing. The European version has RM plus some extra letters and numbers, which my copy doesn't have.
fantastic re-release, absolutely gorgeous, flat and pristine pressing. candy apple grey never sounded this good. rest in peace Grant Hart. you'll be greatly missed.
I keep ending up with the incorrect version of this album. Sellers are listing this one: https://www.discogs.com/H%C3%BCsker-D%C3%BC-Candy-Apple-Grey/release/10432600, yet it's not the first pressing. It's so simple to verify if the matrix/runout on the record matches the one on this release page. I'm fed up with this happening on Discogs. The last several orders I've gotten were all different versions than what was advertised. You can't just glance at the record's title and sell it as any random version. Please be more cautious and ensure you're selling the correct version! It's just unprofessional and incredibly frustrating. I despise wasting money, and I'm sure many others feel the same. I specifically wanted a first pressing, and if I wanted a different one, I would have gone to that release page and bought that version.
