Quite the pleasant shock. This is the Nipsey Hussle I fell in love with when I copped my first XXL during my freshman year of high school. This was back when I thought Nip was the truth, even before I set foot in Crenshaw a year later. This was when he was writing, and man, his pen game was on point. No "nigga" punctuations like in his later "off da dome" style tapes that got more attention. If Nip had stuck to writing, this tape shows just how incredible he could've been. The stories really hit home with what I went through as a teen in Crenshaw - from getting kicked out by my mom to that thunderdome moment (getting jumped in) in the 60's hood ("Pistol On My Lap"). "Makin Them Swerves" gives a glimpse into drug dealing in L.A. (as I recall from hanging around my Inglewood Fam brother-in-law), "Dre Jackin For Beats" gives us an idea of what Nip would sound like over beats from the West Coast's most famous producer, and "Closer Than Close" is the underrated jam with a killer sample, while "Black Superman" is THE posse cut of the album. With shoutouts from Power 106 DJ's that bring me right back to my teenage years in The LAnd, "Bullets ... Vol.1" is Nip's best work and shows why he was such a promising artist back when he wrote his rhymes down and hadn't switched to his free-form spoken word style.
