I own quite a few Barney Kessel albums, and this one really makes you wonder, "what if Barney had been a rock guitarist in the late '50s, tearing through some rather unexpected songs?" At first, I thought the music was a bit cheesy, but he actually comes up with some really inventive arrangements, far from your typical instrumental covers. Say goodbye, Austin Powers. Like many of these Barney Kessel records on the Reprise label, his band backs him up perfectly, keeping him as the star of the show. This is great if you're not looking for complex improvisations or intricate interplay. All in all, it's a very enjoyable album. It's lively, upbeat, and full of energy. You might never have heard Barney's signature ES-150 guitar sound so bright before, take note.

This is Barney Kessel tearing it up on blues guitar with hard bop and some swingin', groovin' organ and a big band backing him up. Imagine Brian Setzer's big band with some smokin' guitar and a cool crew behind him. The guitar is front and center in the mix. This is AMAZING! If you come in expecting the usual Barney Kessel jazz vibe or that Bossa Nova beat from the album cover... you're gonna be let down. But if you're looking for blues and grooves - you're in for a treat. A fantastic, underrated album with incredible playing and arrangements.
