Having never listened to the original '60s pressings, I can't make a comparison, but the audio quality here shifts quite a bit from one song to the next. It's never mind-blowing, but keep in mind Bo cut these tracks in his home studio, and top-notch fidelity wasn't his main concern. At its best, the sound is crisp but a tad lifeless, and at its worst, it's intentionally lo-fi, though that might've been the case on the original release too. Regardless, the songs are fantastic...this album packs a punch with an impressive lineup of killer tracks ("Cadillac"! "Ride on Josephine"! "Doing the Crawdaddy"! "Cheyenne"!) that you won't find on every compilation, so 'Gunslinger' is a fantastic addition to 'Chess Masters' or 'His Greatest Sides'. The bonus tracks are solid, the pressing is clean and quiet, and there's no fake-stereo. Sure, Waxtime is one of those UK p.d. labels, but I've never had a bad experience with their releases.
Among the first Bo Diddley records I picked up. This one really COOKS! You've got the must-have title song where Bo Diddley drops his name a ton. "Ride on Josephine" is just bursting with energy! "Sixteen Tons" is a fantastic take. And there's a rare, beautiful slow one: "No More Lovin'". Overall, this might just be my top Bo Diddley album!
