Energetic, hush-hush, incredibly pressed. This is honestly one of the best sounding albums I have.

I'm a massive Kenny Wheeler and Dave Holland enthusiast, especially when it comes to their ECM recordings. This album is incredibly modern, a chamber jazz piece without a drummer, much like Jimmy Giuffre's fantastic ECM trios. It doesn't swing; instead, it's an ethereal experience best enjoyed in a dimly lit room during the cold winter months. Shockingly, Allmusic only rated it 2 stars, which I believe shows a certain anti-ECM bias in the US. The vinyl version is far superior to the 1990s CD, offering a more open and musical sound. The audio quality is crisp, with a wide soundstage, plenty of space, and outstanding performances from these legendary artists. ECM has done a fantastic job with this vinyl reissue; it's a must-have for fans of this genre.
Over the last few weeks, I've been counting down the days until I got this record for Christmas... WOW! This is one of those transcendent albums that's hard to put into words. I'd streamed it on Spotify, but this vinyl version (the first time it's been released in this format) really brings the music to life and lets it shine. This album introduced me to post-1960s Lee Konitz, who's become one of my favorite musicians lately. And of course, having Bill Frisell and Dave Holland in the band makes it even more compelling. Kenny Wheeler's playing is absolutely beautiful, and the music on this LP (no drummer, mind you) is truly unique and unlike anything else I can think of right now. Just another mind-opening ECM release! 10/10
I'm blown away by the incredible music these talented artists have created on this album. I've got to give ECM some credit too, for sharing this fantastic music with us over the years. I can't help but geek out a bit in this review, so I've gotta say, the sound quality of this record is absolutely stunning. The luminessence series is right up there with my favorite ECM records from the 70s and 80s. I'd highly recommend it. Great job, ECM!
