I stumbled upon this record at a nearby second-hand store, advertised as being in pristine condition, but it's got quite a bit of surface noise crackling away. That said, it's a pretty loud pressing that sounds warm and clear.
Upon comparing this to my 1958 LP version, I found that the 2017 release doesn't quite match up in terms of sound quality. My 1958 copy is in VG condition and has quite a bit of surface noise, but despite that, the music still comes through beautifully with a fantastic sound. I was hoping to find a new, clean copy that could match that quality, but the 2017 version has its own surface noise issues. (Most of my new records are completely quiet, and I keep my collection very clean.) I was surprised that even after a thorough wet cleaning, there are still noticeable low noise clicks and pops on the 2017, especially during the soft ballads. Overall, the 2017 sounds alright, but it lacks the soundstage, instrument separation, and rich vocals that the 1958 has. I haven't come across a superior new release yet, so the 2017 will have to do for now. But if you're searching for the best version, this isn't it.
Originally dropped in '54 and reissued on this LP in 1980...This comes via a unique music recording technique by the folks at Capitol Records...As per Wikipedia, it's called Duophonic sound, a method used by Capitol on certain mono recordings from the '60s and '70s. They'd process these mono tracks into a kind of artificial stereo. It's often referred to as fake or mock stereo...So here's the amazing King delivering his absolute best in this FAKE stereo format...He started out with his original trio in tiny bars along Western Avenue in Downtown LA way back when...He blossomed into an incredible talent and became a staple on the Capitol label for decades...His daughter later carved out her own career on VINYL.
I got super lucky and snagged this for just $5 at a vinyl shop in Portland. It's got an amazing sound!
Singing great. Treble good. Bass good. All in all, very nice record.
