Alright, so why aren't there more people talking about the various versions of this amazing album? I've been playing mine a lot, but my WaxTime copy isn't sounding all that great, honestly. It's one of 10 WaxTime reissues I have, and a couple of them sound a bit off, kind of distorted. The rest are fantastic, though. And yeah, the channels do cut out on this one, just like someone else mentioned earlier. I don't have anything else to compare it to yet, but maybe I'll track down a Japanese reissue or a 1962 original, or even that 1979 reissue that people say isn't so good... just to see how they stack up and keep everyone in the loop. Starting to think there might've been some stereo issue, since the original was mono, I think. But then I see all these older stereo versions out there, so that can't be the problem. Right now, I'm just bummed that I don't have a better copy. Even with its flaws, though, this one's still enjoyable to listen to, and that's probably because the music itself is just so darn beautiful.
Nina Simone stands out as an artist who resists easy classification, slipping through the cracks of Jazz or Soul genres. She's more aligned with Folk, Gospel, or the Blues; perhaps it's best to carve out a distinct category for her, something like "Simonesque." This third live album under the Colpix label offers an intimate vibe, capturing the essence of a cozy club setting. Barring the spirited "Children Go Where I Send You," the tracks here are quite relaxed. Her rendition of "House of the Rising Sun" is notably calmer than her later, livelier take on "Nina Sings The Blues," and interestingly, it was recorded before Dylan's version, even if his was released first. This is a solid recording of an artist in full bloom.
