Alongside Surrender and Hanna, this stands as their finest creation. An absolute bigbeat masterpiece.
Awesome pressing. Tons of dynamics. Quiet vinyl. If it's not in your collection, grab it.
This debut album from the producer duo showcases their unique take on electronic music and highlights their fondness for loops. The title nods to their previous name, "The Dust Brothers," marking their transition to "The Chemical Brothers." This CD not only marked their first release under their new name but also secured a deal with Virgin Records, propelling them to global fame. In 1996, it achieved gold record status, and their live performances around that time were widely regarded as some of the best in the world.
Back in August 1995, I shared my thoughts on this album, and here's what I had to say:Summary: catchy beats with a techno-funk twist, promising stuff from the Chemical BrothersTheir latest release, finally available in the US, kicks off with a relentless barrage of massive sampled beats and gritty basslines, a non-stop, high-energy ride for the young and energetic, packed into 6 tracks, including rave favorites "Song to the Siren" and "Chemical Beats". It's pretty much guaranteed that Exit Planet Dust will be the most popular and overplayed techno crossover album of the year; its only real downside is Rowlands & Simons' tendency to repeat themes instead of exploring variations—a common issue with creating instantly appealing dance music, but something the average listener won't mind given the album's high-energy, foot-tapping, Beastie-Boys-meets-caffeine charm. The second half of the album takes a slower, dubbier turn, with two tracks featuring vocals by The Charlatans' Tim Burgess, bringing back memories of the days when 'rave' was all about baggy pants and Manchester dance rock, as much as it was about 808 State and acid house. I'm hoping the Chemical Brothers branch out into more original, less sample-reliant music, but for now, their debut album is always a welcome addition to my collection.
Kicking off as a cornerstone of the big beat genre, the Chemical Brothers' debut, EXIT PLANET DUST, dives right in with the groovy bass and heavy beats of "Leave Home," and the rhythm doesn't let up with "In Dust We Trust." But then, the spun and treated vocals on "Song to the Siren" bring a swirling, dreamlike vibe before transitioning into the relentless acid house of "Three Little Birdies Down Beats." "Fuck Up Beats" and its counterpart "Chemical Beats" are all about that chunky sound. Yet, the laid-back funk of "Chico's Groove" gets its moment to shine, as does the subtle sampling from Louise Trehy on "One Too Many Mornings." But the album's peak is the guitar-driven beat of "Life Is Sweet," featuring Tim Burgess from The Charlatans on vocals. Beth Orton lends her folksy voice to the dub-influenced "Alive Alone." A groundbreaking album that still stands strong today.
