Product description

Ellen Taaffe Zwilich, one of America's most celebrated contemporary classical composers, presents a captivating collection of works in her album released on September 28, 2010. This album, spanning 52 minutes, is a testament to Zwilich's versatility and mastery, featuring three distinct suites: "Millennium Fantasy," "Images," and "Peanuts Gallery."

"Millennium Fantasy" opens the album with two movements that explore contrasting tempos, offering a dynamic start to the journey. The first movement, marked by a steady quarter note of 60, gives way to a lively second movement with a quarter note of 180, showcasing Zwilich's ability to create diverse musical landscapes.

The "Images" suite is a five-movement journey through evocative musical scenes. From the haunting "La Poupée Abandonnée" to the vibrant "Bacchus No. 3," each piece paints a vivid picture, demonstrating Zwilich's skill in conveying imagery through sound. The suite culminates in "Spiritualist," a piece that delves into the mystical and otherworldly.

The "Peanuts Gallery" suite brings a playful and nostalgic touch to the album. Inspired by the beloved comic strip, these six movements capture the essence of the Peanuts characters. From Schroeder's Beethoven Fantasy to Snoopy's energetic Samba, and Charlie Brown's poignant Lament, each piece is a delightful musical portrayal that will resonate with fans of the classic comic.

Performed by the Florida State University Symphony Orchestra and various soloists, this album is a must-listen for fans of contemporary classical music. Zwilich's compositions, recorded with precision and passion, offer a rich and engaging experience that highlights her unique voice in the world of classical music.

About Ellen Taaffe Zwilich

Ellen Taaffe Zwilich is a pioneering American composer whose work has left an indelible mark on the contemporary classical music scene. As the first woman to receive the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 1983, Zwilich's compositions are celebrated for their emotional depth, rich character, and technical brilliance. Her early works delve into atonal exploration, while her later pieces embrace a postmodernist, neoromantic style, showcasing her versatility and evolution as an artist. Zwilich's extensive catalogue includes orchestral works, concertos, and chamber music, each piece crafted with impeccable skill and a unique melodic voice. Her collaborations, such as her compositions inspired by Charles M. Schulz's Peanuts, and her commemorative works like 'Memorial: For the Victims of the Sandy Hook Massacre,' highlight her ability to connect with audiences on a profound level. Zwilich's influence extends beyond her compositions; she has been a mentor and educator, serving as the Francis Eppes Distinguished Professor at Florida State University. Her contributions to music have earned her numerous accolades, including induction into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame, cementing her status as one of America's most respected and beloved living composers.
