Product description

Hans Zender's "Zender: Schumann-Phantasie / Bardo" is a captivating exploration of avant-garde music, released on January 1, 2006, under the SWR Classic label. This intriguing album spans a total of 67 minutes, offering a unique blend of classical reinterpretation and contemporary composition.

The first half of the album features Zender's imaginative take on Robert Schumann's "Fantasy in C Major, Op. 17." Zender deconstructs and reconstructs Schumann's original work, creating a fresh and thought-provoking listening experience. The pieces are interspersed with interludes, adding a sense of drama and intrigue to the overall composition.

The second half of the album introduces Zender's own creation, "Bardo." This five-movement work is structured in a series of solos and tutti, showcasing the dynamic interplay between individual and ensemble performances. The title "Bardo" is inspired by the Tibetan concept of the state between death and rebirth, suggesting a journey through different states of consciousness.

Throughout the album, Zender's innovative approach to composition and his mastery of the avant-garde genre shine through. "Zender: Schumann-Phantasie / Bardo" is a testament to Zender's unique artistic vision and his ability to push the boundaries of classical music. Whether you're a fan of avant-garde music or simply curious about Zender's reinterpretation of Schumann, this album offers a compelling and engaging listening experience.

About Hans Zender

Hans Zender, the late German conductor and composer, left an indelible mark on the world of avant-garde music. Born in Wiesbaden in 1936, Zender's journey in music began with studies in piano, conducting, and composition at the Musikhochschule in Frankfurt and Freiburg. His career spanned decades, during which he served as chief conductor at several opera houses and became renowned for his innovative approach to music.

Zender's compositions, including the operas "Stephen Climax" and "Don Quixote," reflect his deep engagement with literature and philosophy, making his works a rich tapestry of interdisciplinary art. He was particularly known for his "composed re-compositions," a concept that challenges traditional performances by reinterpreting canonized works, a method that brought him international acclaim, particularly with his reworking of Schubert's "Winterreise."

Beyond his compositions, Zender was celebrated as a leading interpreter of avant-garde music, continually integrating new impulses into his works. His hypothesis that altering a canonized work could be the most authentic way of performing it set him apart in the musical world. Hans Zender's legacy endures as one of Germany's most distinguished post-war composers, his works continuing to inspire and intrigue audiences worldwide.
