It's great having this on vinyl, but I feel like the sound is a bit squashed and lifeless. There's nothing outright 'wrong' or faulty with it, it just feels unexciting to listen to. I might be mistaken, but I'd wager that this was sourced from a CD (which, sadly, might be the best source available now). After comparing, I reckon the original CD actually sounds better—much more vibrant. Well, at least I've got the large artwork from the record, I suppose? Listening setup: rega p6, ortofan mc cadenza bronze cartridge, stein music 'the perfect interface' carbon mat, liberty b2b-1 preamp, hegel h95 integrated amp, elac debut b5 speakers
I aimed to purchase the 2017 EU version based on all the feedback, but this is what arrived. It was still sealed, so I only found out after opening it. There's no runout details on that pressing’s page, so I can't be totally sure, but this appears to be the same pressing, judging by the comments there. It's dynamic, with excellent separation and a silent noise floor. For anyone in North America, go ahead and buy this version with confidence and avoid those extra Euro/UK shipping fees!
I purchased the bullet and splurged on the fresh BONGLOAD re-release. Apart from some surface noise, it seems to be the finest sounding version of this out there...so far.
In my view, this is a fantastic re-release of XO! The audio quality is crystal clear, and the album is nicely packaged with a great inner sleeve and lyric sheet. If you're after a top-notch version and have been wary of other editions, this is the one to grab!
Harsh highs, lack of clarity in the upper range, and no punch… I haven't listened to the original copy, but I'd be shocked if it's any worse. A letdown for such an amazing album.
