About Makiko Hirabayashi

Makiko Hirabayashi is a captivating Japanese jazz pianist and composer who has made Denmark her creative home since 1990. Born in Tokyo in 1966, her musical journey began at the tender age of four when she first touched the piano keys, followed by the violin at nine. Her early fascination with film music composition led her to Berklee College of Music in Boston, where she delved deeper into jazz and improvisation. Since then, Hirabayashi has crafted a unique musical language that reflects her rich cultural background and artistic maturity.

With over three decades in Copenhagen, Hirabayashi has released a impressive discography, including her tenth studio album, "Gifts," which showcases her evocative compositions and masterful piano playing. Her collaborations, notably with the Makiko Hirabayashi Trio, have garnered international acclaim for their vibrant interplay and compelling storytelling. Hirabayashi's music transcends borders, offering a modern and multicultural perspective that resonates with audiences worldwide. Whether performing with her trio or exploring new sonic territories, Makiko Hirabayashi continues to enchant and inspire with her original and engaging musical idiom.
