About Kenny Wheeler

Kenny Wheeler, born in Toronto in 1930, was a Canadian composer and trumpeter who made a significant impact on the jazz scene, particularly in the UK, where he resided from the 1950s until his passing in 2014. Known for his versatility and adventurous spirit, Wheeler's music spanned various genres, including free jazz, big band, and even rock. His compositions, over a hundred in total, showcased his sophisticated and melodic style, often blending post-bop influences with avant-garde elements. Wheeler collaborated with numerous jazz greats, such as Keith Jarrett, Dave Holland, and Evan Parker, and his work as a bandleader and sideman resulted in a prolific discography. His distinctive sound on the trumpet and flugelhorn, coupled with his skill as an arranger, made him a leading figure in European jazz. Wheeler's legacy continues to inspire, with recent releases breathing new life into his previously unrecorded music.
