Product description

Sumac's second studio album, "What One Becomes," is a relentless and cerebral journey through the heavier realms of post-metal, blending elements of sludge, drone, stoner, noise, and doom metal into a cohesive and crushing whole. Released on June 10, 2016, via Thrill Jockey, this album is a testament to the band's ability to craft intricate and intense soundscapes that demand your full attention.

Comprising ten tracks, "What One Becomes" is notable for its unique structure, with several tracks split into multiple parts, allowing the band to explore different facets of their sound within each composition. The album opens with "Image of Control (I & II)," setting the stage for the heavy, rhythmic onslaught that follows. Tracks like "Rigid Man (I & II)" and "Clutch of Oblivion (I & II)" showcase Sumac's ability to build tension and release it in waves of crushing riffs and thunderous drums.

The band, featuring members of renowned acts like Botch, Isis, and Russian Circles, delivers a performance that is both technically impressive and emotionally resonant. Aaron Turner, the main driving force behind Sumac, brings his signature intensity and depth to the album, creating a sound that is both familiar and fresh.

The production is raw and powerful, with each instrument given space to breathe and interact, creating a dynamic and immersive listening experience. The album's artwork and packaging, featuring a wide spine jacket with a custom debossed slipcase, reflect the band's attention to detail and commitment to delivering a complete artistic experience.

"What One Becomes" is a must-listen for fans of heavy music, offering a challenging and rewarding journey through some of the most intense and innovative sounds in modern metal. Whether you're a longtime fan of Sumac or new to their music, this album is sure to leave a lasting impression.

This 2017 Limited Edition Repress 2LP set is pressed on White vinyl.

  • Sumac Vinyl Brilliance

    4 out of 5 stars
    puotyubppiedJuly 24, 2025United States🇺🇸

This album is amazing! The vinyl quality is fantastic, and I haven't noticed any problems with it. I'm a big fan of Sumac, which is surprising since I usually don't go for sludge music, like 97 percent of the time. But this record is absolutely brilliant!

  • Turner's Heavy Masterpiece

    5 out of 5 stars
    kodjnleudluApril 12, 2025United States🇺🇸

Aaron Turner wasn't always my favorite, but this new album is a game-changer. He's gotten insanely heavy, backed by a band that's locked in tighter than ever. Three guys at the top of their game. Brian Cook's skills are no secret, and drummer Nick Yacyshyn is a name you'll want to remember (that drumming is out of this world!!!). This band is something special, with a massive range of sound. Absolutely fantastic album.

  • Red Vinyl Scratch Issue

... but that red vinyl seems to have a bit of an issue, like a tiny scratchy sound. Has anyone else noticed this?

About Sumac

Sumac is a captivating musical project that blends the raw intensity of sludge metal, the hypnotic drones of drone metal, the heavy riffs of stoner metal, the chaotic energy of noise rock, and the slow, crushing weight of doom metal. Hailing from the same name as a versatile spice known for its tangy, citrusy, and smoky flavors, Sumac brings a similarly complex and bold flavor to the metal scene. With a sound that is as deep and rich as the burgundy-colored sumac spice, Sumac's music is a journey through heavy, atmospheric, and often experimental landscapes. Their music is not just an auditory experience but a full sensory immersion, much like the multifaceted nature of the sumac spice itself. Sumac's unique blend of genres and their ability to create a sound that is both crushing and melodic makes them a standout in the world of heavy music.
