What Is There To Say? - Gerry Mulligan

Product description

Immerse yourself in the cool, sophisticated world of Gerry Mulligan with his 1959 album "What Is There To Say?". This classic jazz album is a testament to Mulligan's mastery of the baritone saxophone and his innovative contributions to the cool jazz and hard bop genres. Joined by the talented Art Farmer on trumpet, Bill Crow on bass, and Dave Bailey on drums, Mulligan crafts a sound that is both intimate and explosive, showcasing the dynamic interplay between the quartet's members.

The album opens with the title track, "What Is There To Say", setting the tone for the rest of the record with its moody, introspective melody. Standout tracks like "My Funny Valentine" and "Just In Time" highlight Mulligan's ability to blend tender balladry with swinging bebop rhythms. The album also features the original composition "News From Blueport" and "Blueport", offering a glimpse into Mulligan's creative process and his knack for crafting memorable, engaging tunes.

Recorded in 1959 and released under the Legacy/Columbia label, "What Is There To Say?" is a timeless addition to any jazz enthusiast's collection. With a runtime of just over 40 minutes, the album is a concise yet powerful showcase of Mulligan's artistry and his lasting impact on the world of jazz. Whether you're a longtime fan or a newcomer to his music, this album is sure to captivate and inspire.

This LP was released in 1959.

About Gerry Mulligan

Gerry Mulligan, affectionately known as "Jeru," was a pioneering force in the world of jazz, renowned for his mastery of the baritone saxophone and his innovative contributions as a composer, arranger, and bandleader. Born in Queens, New York, in 1927, Mulligan's light and airy tone on the baritone sax became a defining characteristic of the cool jazz movement. His piano-less quartet with Chet Baker in the early 1950s is still celebrated as one of the finest cool jazz ensembles. Beyond his saxophone prowess, Mulligan was a skilled pianist and versatile reed player, known for his fluidity, speed, and lyricism. His compositions, such as "Walkin' Shoes" and "Five Brothers," have become jazz standards. Collaborating with legends like Miles Davis and Stan Kenton, Mulligan's influence spans cool jazz, bebop, and hard bop, making him one of the most respected and admired musicians in jazz history.
