Product description

Dive into the captivating world of "Voice," the 2016 release from innovative composer and violinist Jason Kao Hwang. This album, a unique blend of free jazz and avant-garde, is a testament to Hwang's artistic vision and his ability to seamlessly integrate poetry with improvised music. "Voice" is divided into two distinct sets: "Lifelines" and "Words of Our Own," each performed by different ensembles, showcasing the versatility and depth of Hwang's compositions.

The "Lifelines" suite, featuring poetry by Lester Afflick, Patricia Spears Jones, and davida singer, is performed by a quartet that includes Deanna Relyea on voice and Piotr Michalowski on reeds. This suite is a collection of five jewel-like miniatures, each crafted with precision and purpose, reflecting Hwang's shared sensibility with composers like Webern. The poetry leads the music, creating a harmonious blend of spoken and sung lines that evoke a range of tones and expressions.

"Words of Our Own" features the Charles Gayle Trio's performance at the Knitting Factory, along with other original compositions. This set includes a diverse range of performances, from the hauntingly beautiful "In the Wind There Is a Presence No. 2" to the playful "A Rose Is a Rose" and the evocative "Gypsy Prayers." The ensemble for this set includes notable musicians such as Thomas Buckner, Joe McPhee, and William Parker, among others, each contributing their unique talents to the rich tapestry of sounds.

"Voice" is not just an album; it's an exploration of the human voice and its ability to convey deep, personal resonances. Each poem chosen by Hwang feels like a personal expression, speaking words that are both universal and deeply individual. The collaboration between Hwang, the poets, and the musicians results in a recording that is as intellectually stimulating as it is aesthetically pleasing. Whether you're a fan of free jazz, avant-garde music, or simply appreciate the art of poetry and music fusion, "Voice" offers a rich and rewarding listening experience.

About Jason Kao Hwang

Jason Kao Hwang is a pioneering Chinese American violinist and composer who has carved out a unique niche in the world of experimental music. Born in 1957, Hwang is renowned for his unconventional and improvisational jazz violin technique, which he employs to create intricate and emotionally resonant compositions. His work often draws from a rich tapestry of influences, including jazz, classical, and traditional Chinese music, resulting in a sound that is distinctly his own.

Hwang's compositions are narrative landscapes, inviting the audience on transformational journeys through sound. His chamber opera, "The Floating Box: A Story in Chinatown," premiered in 2001 and was released in 2005, showcasing his ability to blend storytelling with innovative musical structures. He has been recognized multiple times by the El Intruso Critics and the Downbeat Critics’ Poll, cementing his status as a leading figure in avant-garde and free jazz.

As an educator and artist-in-residence at various institutions, Hwang has also dedicated himself to teaching and lecturing, sharing his unique perspective on music and culture. His ensembles, such as his trio with electric guitarist Anders Nilsson and drummer Michael T.A. Thompson, are known for their adventurous fusion sessions, where musical influences never sit still. Whether performing with a mixed ensemble of jazz, classical, and Chinese instruments or exploring the depths of improvisational soliloquies, Jason Kao Hwang continues to push the boundaries of what music can be.
