About Nancy Van de Vate

Nancy Van de Vate (1930-2023) was an American-born Austrian composer, violist, and pianist who made significant waves in the world of contemporary classical music. Born in Plainfield, New Jersey, she spent much of her life in Vienna, Austria, where she taught music composition at the Institute for European Studies. Known for her prolific output and large-scale works, Van de Vate broke gender barriers in her field, becoming one of the most recorded composers of her time. Her music, characterized by its modernist style, continues to captivate audiences worldwide, even if her works are not as frequently performed as those of her peers.
