Product description

Horace Parlan's "Up And Down" is a quintessential hard bop album that captures the essence of the early 1960s jazz scene. Recorded on June 18, 1961, and originally released in 1963, this Blue Note classic has been beautifully remastered and reissued in 2009, offering both vinyl and CD formats. The album features the stellar lineup of Horace Parlan on piano, Booker Ervin on tenor saxophone, Grant Green on guitar, George Tucker on bass, and Al Harewood on drums.

Parlan, known for his soulful and bluesy piano playing, delivers a powerful performance throughout the album. The tracks, such as the title song "Up And Down," "The Book's Beat," and "Lonely One," showcase his exceptional skill and the band's tight chemistry. The album is a testament to the vibrant and innovative spirit of hard bop, blending elements of bebop, cool jazz, and even free jazz.

The 2009 remastered edition, overseen by the legendary Rudy Van Gelder, ensures that the original recordings are presented with pristine clarity and depth. This reissue allows both longtime fans and new listeners to experience the raw energy and sophistication of Parlan's music. Whether you're a jazz enthusiast or a casual listener, "Up And Down" is a compelling journey through the rich tapestry of 1960s jazz, highlighting the timeless artistry of Horace Parlan and his bandmates.

About Horace Parlan

Horace Parlan, born in Pittsburgh in 1931 and later residing in Denmark, was a pioneering force in the world of jazz piano. Despite contracting polio as a child, which left his right hand partially paralyzed, Parlan defied the odds to become a renowned hard bop and post-bop pianist. His distinctive, bluesy style is perhaps best known through his collaborations with the legendary Charles Mingus on seminal albums like "Mingus Ah Um." Parlan's discography, featuring iconic works like "Movin' and Groovin'" and "Speakin' My Piece," showcases his soulful and innovative approach to jazz. Throughout the 1960s, he was a frequent collaborator with Blue Note Records, leaving an indelible mark on the genre. Parlan's music transcends mere notes on a page, offering a profound and emotional journey for any jazz enthusiast.
