Trio and Duet - Anthony Braxton

Product description

Anthony Braxton's 'Trio and Duet' is a captivating jazz album, initially recorded in 1974 and released on the Canadian Sackville label. This remarkable collection features a trio performance of one of Braxton's compositions, as well as three duets on timeless jazz standards. The album boasts an impressive lineup, with Braxton on alto saxophone, clarinet, and contrabass clarinet, accompanied by esteemed musicians David Holland on bass, Leo Smith, and Richard Teitelbaum.

The album's structure is characterised by a 19-minute original piece, 'Comp. 36', a three-part composition for synthesizer, woodwind, and trumpet, showcasing Braxton's innovative approach to jazz. The remaining tracks are devoted to interpretations of beloved jazz standards, including 'The Song Is You', 'Embraceable You', 'You Got To My Head', 'On Green Dolphin Street', and 'I Remember You'. These performances not only demonstrate Braxton's mastery of his craft but also his ability to pay homage to the jazz tradition while infusing it with his unique perspective.

'Trio and Duet' was reissued in 2015 by Delmark Records, which acquired the Sackville label's catalog, and includes two bonus tracks. With a total playing time of 1 hour and 4 minutes, this album is a testament to Braxton's innovative spirit and his position as a leading figure in the jazz avant-garde. The album's release is a significant addition to any jazz enthusiast's collection, offering a fascinating glimpse into the creative genius of Anthony Braxton.

This LP was released in 1974.

Wow, this is fantastic! It's way more chill and open than most of Braxton's work. Richard Teitelbaum's Moog synths are pretty wild and give this album a cool, unique twist. Really fascinating stuff!

About Anthony Braxton

Anthony Braxton is a pioneering figure in the world of experimental and avant-garde jazz, renowned for his innovative compositions and virtuosic performances on a multitude of woodwind instruments, with a particular affinity for the saxophone. Born and raised on the South Side of Chicago, Braxton's musical journey began with his involvement in the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), where he honed his skills and developed his unique musical philosophy. His groundbreaking 1969 album "For Alto," the first full-length solo saxophone record, catapulted him into the spotlight and established him as a trailblazer in the free jazz community.

Braxton's music is a complex tapestry that draws from a wide range of influences, blending Afrological traditions with experimental techniques. His compositions, often titled with diagrams rather than words, reflect his deep engagement with global creativity and humanity. As a multi-instrumentalist, he masterfully plays an array of saxophones, clarinets, and even the piano, showcasing his versatility and technical prowess.

Beyond his musical accomplishments, Braxton is also a dedicated educator and music theorist, having developed his own unique musical system that celebrates innovation and artistic expression. His work has earned him numerous accolades, including the prestigious NEA Jazz Master award in 2014. With a prolific discography and a relentless creative spirit, Anthony Braxton continues to inspire and challenge audiences, solidifying his status as one of the most important musicians of the past half-century.
