Product description

Immerse yourself in the timeless elegance of cool jazz with Jimmy Giuffre's "Trio 1957 - 1958," a captivating collection of live performances that epitomize the West Coast jazz scene of the late 1950s. This album, released by Amanita on November 5, 2020, brings together the enchanting interplay of Jimmy Giuffre on clarinet, tenor, and baritone sax, Jim Hall on guitar, and Ralph Pena on bass. The ten tracks, recorded live at the Stars of Jazz KABC TV show and the Newport Jazz Festival, offer a rare glimpse into the trio's dynamic chemistry and innovative approach to jazz.

From the lively "Gotta Dance" to the introspective "The Lonely Time," each track showcases the trio's mastery of cool jazz, with Giuffre's distinctive flute and saxophone work weaving seamlessly with Hall's guitar and Pena's bass. The album also features the extended "Pony Express (Western Suite)," a standout piece that highlights the trio's ability to blend jazz with elements of Western music. The Train and the River, a track that has become a classic in its own right, is a testament to the trio's ability to create music that is both sophisticated and accessible.

"Trio 1957 - 1958" is not just a collection of songs but a historical document that captures a pivotal moment in jazz history. The album's 42-minute runtime is a journey through the evolution of cool jazz, with each track offering a unique perspective on the genre. Whether you're a seasoned jazz enthusiast or a newcomer to the genre, this album is a must-listen that will leave you with a deeper appreciation for the artistry of Jimmy Giuffre and his trio.

About Jimmy Giuffre

Jimmy Giuffre was a pioneering American jazz musician, composer, and arranger whose innovative spirit continually pushed the boundaries of the genre. Born in Dallas, Texas, in 1921, Giuffre began his musical journey on the clarinet at a young age and later mastered the saxophone and guitar. He is renowned for his development of jazz forms that emphasized free interplay and improvisation, anticipating the free jazz movement.

Giuffre's career spanned over five decades, during which he explored various styles, from the cool jazz of the West Coast to the avant-garde. He is perhaps best known for his work with Woody Herman, where he co-wrote the iconic "Four Brothers" arrangement, and for leading influential trios that featured a drummerless format, allowing for unique musical dialogues.

His compositions and arrangements bridged diverse musical traditions, connecting swing, modernism, free jazz, and even folk music. Despite his groundbreaking work, Giuffre's eclectic approach sometimes led to obscurity, as he didn't fit neatly into conventional jazz categories. However, his impact on the jazz world is undeniable, and his legacy continues to inspire musicians and enthusiasts alike.
