Product description

Ernst Toch's "Toch: Symphonies Nos. 1 & 4" is a captivating journey through the symphonic works of this remarkable composer. Released on January 1, 2000, under the CPO label, this album features the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, conducted by Alun Francis, delivering a powerful and nuanced performance. The album spans a total duration of 1 hour and 6 minutes, offering a rich and immersive listening experience.

The album showcases two of Toch's most significant symphonic works: Symphony No. 1, Op. 72, and Symphony No. 4, Op. 80. Each symphony is divided into four distinct movements, each with its own unique character and emotional depth. From the tranquil opening of Symphony No. 1's "Molto tranquillo" to the lively energy of Symphony No. 4's "Lively con brio," Toch's compositions demonstrate a remarkable range of musical expression.

Toch, an Austrian-born composer who later became a naturalized American citizen, is known for his innovative and expressive musical language. His works often blend traditional symphonic forms with modernist techniques, creating a sound that is both familiar and fresh. This album is a testament to Toch's enduring legacy and his ability to craft symphonies that are both intellectually stimulating and emotionally resonant.

Whether you are a longtime fan of Ernst Toch or a newcomer to his music, this album offers a compelling introduction to his symphonic works. The Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin's performance is both technically impressive and deeply expressive, bringing Toch's compositions to life with clarity and passion.

About Ernst Toch

Ernst Toch (1887-1964) was an Austrian composer whose innovative works bridged classical tradition and modern musical ideas. Initially celebrated in Weimar Germany, Toch's career took a dramatic turn when he fled the Nazis, eventually settling in Hollywood. There, he composed both classical pieces and film scores, bringing his unique avant-garde perspective to the silver screen. Toch's music is noted for its formal perfection and deep emotional resonance, often reflecting his personal journey and advocacy for universal justice. Despite his earlier prominence, Toch lamented being overlooked in his later years, yet his compositions continue to captivate audiences with their timeless appeal.
