This is absolutely amazing, but it's a shame it doesn't include the final three tracks from the CD; I suppose it was too lengthy for a single disc, but not enough to justify two discs.
From Jack's viewpoint, which is a sweet spot to be, he's really going at it, hammering those parched cymbals like there's no tomorrow. And the bass? It's smokin' hot! No need for a sub here, folks!
Great sound quality, but the four-star rating is because of the scratches from the low-quality paper sleeve. Really, Blue Note?
In 1989, John Scofield joined forces with Joe Lovano, kicking off a long and productive partnership. The rhythm section boasts jazz legends DeJohnette and Haden. I saw Sco/Lo in the summer of '88 at the Texas Jazz Festival, and they performed a few tracks from this album. Scofield's modern post-bop style blends blues, bebop, and funk, creating a captivating mix that brings his compositions to life. The recording quality is excellent, mastered by Bob Ludwig. However, John's tone is a bit thinner here compared to other releases, and the mix is enhanced with reverb and studio effects, typical of the era. His playing is technically impressive yet relaxed, with a jazzy and mind-bending quality. He uses an overdriven tone and minor seconds to create dissonant accents effectively. What I appreciate about Scofield is how he starts a bebop line and ends with a blues lick, seamlessly weaving between the two. Lovano matches Scofield's skill, offering a soulful jazz approach that nods to the great tenor masters. He can be intense or gentle, perfectly complementing the ensemble. Four stars. Highly recommended.
