Just by glancing at the three names at the top of this album, you'll get a sense of what to expect. It's a Ron Carter record, featuring piano trio performances with a strong bass focus, dating back to '77. Carter truly shines here, which is a delightful change, reminiscent of the legendary Village Vanguard Bill Evans Trio albumβsome might even say it's a Scott LaFaro showcase. Herbie's playing is silky and full of flavor, though not as exploratory as in his own self-titled releases. He complements the trio beautifully. Williams mostly keeps his energy in check, with occasional bursts of vigor (like his solo on B2), before fading back into the background. The standout track is "Stella By Starlight"; it's an absolutely stunning rendition of this timeless standard. Hancock lets loose with some rapid-fire runs (Γ la "Flight of the Bumblebee") at one point. And it's impossible not to adore "Dolphin Dance" whenever Hancock plays it, especially this version with its dreamy, otherworldly intro. The recording is crisp and the mix is well-balanced. Carter's acoustic bass has a powerful presence. His amp is miked and sounds rich. To my ears, the piano has a slightly artificial tone, but it's not off-putting. 3 and a half stars. Worth checking out.
This pressing sounds fantastic; the soundstage and instrument separation are absolutely perfect. Stunning relaxed performances from three of the most incredible musicians to ever walk this earth.
